In response to the global tobacco problem and the diseases and fatalities caused by the epidemic, the World Health Organization’s Member States established World No Tobacco Day in 1987. In 1987, the World Health Assembly adopted Resolution WHA40.38 declaring April 7 as “World No-Smoking Day.” In 1988, Resolution WHA42.19 was enacted, designating May 31 as World Anti-Tobacco Day. The WHO outlawed all tobacco advertising and promotion in 2008.
