Bhagat Singh Shaheed Diwas in India

Martyr’s Day, also known as Shaheed Diwas, is observed in India on two different dates to honour two significant events in the country’s history. 30th January marks the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, who was killed in 1948 at Gandhi Smriti in the Birla House. On the other hand, 23rd March is a day of remembrance for three Indian revolutionaries, Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar, who were hanged by the British colonial authorities. Both these days are observed as a tribute to the immense sacrifices made by these brave individuals in the fight for India’s freedom from foreign rule.

Undoubtedly, these brave individuals made great sacrifices for the betterment of our nation, even if their methods differed from those of Mahatma Gandhi. They serve as a source of inspiration for the youth of India, having fought with courage for independence at a young age. Bhagat Singh Shaheed Diwas Date: History and Significance

Born on September 28, 1907 in Lyallpur, Punjab, Bhagat Singh was a revolutionary along with his comrades Rajguru, Sukhdev, Azad, and Gopal. They were involved in the assassination of Lala Lajpat Rai, and Bhagat Singh’s daring exploits inspired many youngsters. On April 8th, 1929, they threw bombs over the Central Legislative Assembly shouting the slogan “Inquillab Zindabad”, which resulted in a murder case being charged against them. On 23rd March 1931, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged in Lahore Jail, and their cremation was carried out on the banks of the Sutlej River.

Several days at the national level have been declared as Sarvodaya or Shaheed Diwas to honour the martyrs of the nation. In Jammu and Kashmir, the 13th July is observed as Martyr’s Day to commemorate the deaths of 22 people who were killed by royal soldiers while demonstrating adjacent to Maharaja Hari Singh of Kashmir on July 13, 1931. 

Similarly, 17th November is celebrated as Martyrs Day in Odisha to observe the death anniversary of Lala Lajpat Ray, who played an important role in India’s freedom struggle and is also known as the “Lion of Punjab.” On November 19th, Martyr’s Day is celebrated in Jhansi to honour the sacrifice of Rani Lakshmi Bai, who was born on that day and gave her life during the 1857 revolt. These days are an important reminder of the sacrifices made by these great individuals.
