Bharat Ratna is India’s highest civilian award, established on 2 January 1954. This award is given based on outstanding achievements at the highest level in any field as presented by the President of India. It can be awarded up to three times a year, regardless of race, occupation, position, or gender. The first prizes were awarded in 1954 to politician C. Rajagopalachari, philosopher Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and scientist CV Raman.
