Chess Olympiad Schedule 2022. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first-ever Chess Olympiad torch relay on Sunday, ahead of the 44th edition of the event, which will be held in Mahabalipuram from July 28 to August 10.

The Chess Olympiad is a biennial chess competition in which teams from around the world compete. FIDE organizes the tournament and chooses the host country. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, FIDE held an Online Chess Olympiad in 2020 and 2021, with a strict time limit that affected players’ online ratings.

History of Chess Olympiad

The first Olympic Games were unofficial. An attempt was made to include chess in the Olympic Games for the 1924 Games, but this failed due to difficulties distinguishing between amateur and professional players. The first unofficial Chess Olympiad took place in Paris at the same time as the 1924 Summer Olympics. FIDE was founded on July 20, 1924, the final day of the first unofficial Chess Olympiad.

In 1927, FIDE organized the first official Olympiad, which was held in London. Until World War II, the Olympiads were held on an irregular and annual basis; since 1950, they have been held every two years.

About Chess Olympiad 2022

From July 28 to August 10, 2022, Chennai will host the 44th Chess Olympiad. The prestigious competition, which has been held since 1927, is being held in India for the first time and in Asia for the first time in 30 years. With 189 countries participating, this will be the largest Chess Olympiad ever.

For the first time, the international chess body, FIDE, has instituted the torch relay, which is an Olympic tradition but has never been done in the Chess Olympiad. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich presented the torch to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who presented it to the legendary Viswanathan Anand.

It is the first time in the nearly 100-year history of the Chess Olympiad that India will host the prestigious event. With 188 countries registered for the upcoming Olympiad, the country is set to witness a massive gathering of nations for a sporting event on Indian soil for the first time.
