Chess Olympiad Schedule 2022. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first-ever Chess Olympiad torch relay on Sunday, ahead of the 44th edition of the event, which will be held in Mahabalipuram from July 28 to August 10.
The Chess Olympiad is a biennial chess competition in which teams from around the world compete. FIDE organizes the tournament and chooses the host country. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, FIDE held an Online Chess Olympiad in 2020 and 2021, with a strict time limit that affected players’ online ratings.
History of Chess Olympiad
The first Olympic Games were unofficial. An attempt was made to include chess in the Olympic Games for the 1924 Games, but this failed due to difficulties distinguishing between amateur and professional players. The first unofficial Chess Olympiad took place in Paris at the same time as the 1924 Summer Olympics. FIDE was founded on July 20, 1924, the final day of the first unofficial Chess Olympiad.
In 1927, FIDE organized the first official Olympiad, which was held in London. Until World War II, the Olympiads were held on an irregular and annual basis; since 1950, they have been held every two years.
