Chess Olympiad Winners 2022. The Chess Olympiad is a biannual international chess competition in which teams from all over the world compete. FIDE organizes the event and also selects the host country. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, FIDE held an Online Chess Olympiad in 2020 and 2021, with a short time limit that harmed participants’ online ratings.
This year’s chess olympiad will starts on 28th July and it will end on 10th August.
The term “Chess Olympiad” was coined for FIDE’s team championship for historical purposes and has no connection to the Olympic Games.
History of Chess Olympiad
The first Olympiad was a sham competition. Chess was attempted to be included in the Olympic Games for the 1924 Games, but it failed due to difficulties distinguishing between amateur and professional players.
The first unofficial Chess Olympiad was held in Paris during the Summer Olympics of 1924. FIDE was founded on July 20, 1924, the final day of the first unofficial Chess Olympiad. FIDE organized the first official Olympiad, which took place in London in 1927. The Olympiads were held annually and at irregular intervals until World War II; since 1950, they have been held every two years.
Chess Olympiad Game Detail
The Olympiad is open to teams from any FIDE-recognized chess organisation. Each team has up to five players: four starters and one reserve. Initially, each team competed against every other team, but as the event grew in popularity, this became unsustainable. The teams were seeded prior to the competition. Following the discovery of significant flaws in seeding, a Swiss tournament format was implemented in 1976.
