The Department of Education has established regulations requiring that contenders must pass the CUET entrance test to be admitted to renowned universities, such as JNU, Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University, and Allahabad University. Up to 2021, many central universities accepted students based on their class 12 results, consequently leading to high cut-off rates. The National Testing Agency is responsible for administering the CUET entrance exam and forming the merit list based on it to resolve this problem. Owing to the CUET entrance exam, the weightage of class 12 grades will be lowered and a fair and unified assessment system will be followed to provide admission to the applicants. However, admission to engineering and medical schools sometimes does not require passing the CUET exam; rather, applicants must take the JEE Mains, BITSAT and NEET exams.

The exam is conducted twice a year, in April and October, and the exam is designed to assess the academic and technical aptitude of applicants for admission to universities. It consists of two parts—a general aptitude test and a subject-specific test. The general aptitude test assesses the applicant’s proficiency in English, Mathematics, General Knowledge and Reasoning. The subject-specific test assesses the applicant’s proficiency in the relevant engineering, technology or architecture subject. 

CUET Eligibility Criteria

It is recommended that students verify the requirements for the CUET entrance exam to prevent any complications later on.

  • In order to be eligible to take the Common University Entrance Exam for undergraduate admissions, applicants must have completed their Class 12 board examinations from CBSE, ICSE, or West Bengal boards.
  • To be eligible to take the CUET entrance exam for postgraduate admissions, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited undergraduate college in any field.
  • Only Indian citizens are allowed to take the CUET entrance exam; foreign students are not eligible.
  • In order to apply to college UG courses via the CUET exam, students in the general category must have achieved a minimum of 50% in their class 12 board examination.
  • To be eligible, they should have knowledge of Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology, depending on the UG course they are interested in.
  • Candidates from the general category who are applying for the PG program must have obtained a minimum of 55% in their undergraduate degree in order to take the CUET entrance test. However, the eligibility criteria for students from the SC/ST category is 50% in their bachelor’s degree. Additionally, applicants must have graduated in the same area of study in which they are seeking a master’s degree.
  • It is important to note that 15% and 7.5% of seats are specifically reserved for students from the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories.
  • It has been noted that the necessary requirements for being eligible to take the CUET vary among central universities that accept the CUET scores. Therefore, applicants should take the time to review the criteria thoroughly before completing the application.
