The 5th Jan Aushadhi Diwas 2023 theme, “Jan Aushadhi – Sasti bhi Acchi bhi,” is celebrated throughout India. On this occasion, Jan Aushadhi Mitra, medical professionals, nurses, pharmacists, and others will discuss the Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana. The government wants 10,500 Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJKs) to be operational by March 2025.
About the 5th Jan Aushadhi Diwas
More than 34 Pratigya Yatras have been organised as part of the event, with 8 of them being led on the first day by members of parliament. On the MyGov portal, more than 5,000 users, including doctors, have pledged to only use generic medications. Pad Yatra and Jan Aushadhi Pratidya Yatra were also conducted. The divas’ primary goal is to raise public awareness about PMBJP and generic medications.
History of Jan Aushadhi Diwas
The Jan Aushadhi scheme was launched by the Indian Government in 2008 under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. The scheme aims to provide quality medicines at affordable prices to the common man, particularly to the economically weaker sections of society.
The first Jan Aushadhi store was opened in Amritsar, Punjab in 2008. Since then, the scheme has expanded to over 7,000 stores across the country, providing more than 800 generic medicines and 154 surgical and consumable items. To raise public awareness of generic medications, “Jan Aushadhi Saptah,” or Generic Medicine Week is commemorated annually during the first week of March. “Jan Aushadhi Diwas,” or Generic Medicine Day, is observed on March 7. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proclamation of the day as “Jan Aushadhi Diwas,” this day was first observed on March 7, 2019.
