Pride Month in India. June is widely recognized as “Gay Pride Month,” a time to honor the LGBTQ community and their fight against prejudice and social exclusion. Many nations organize month-long events and campaigns that build to the boisterous climax of the “Gay Pride Parade,” which is typically held at the end of June.

What exactly is Pride Month?
Pride Month in June is all about amplifying LGBTQ voices, celebrating LGBTQ culture, and advocating for LGBTQ rights. The annual observance aims to celebrate people coming together in love and friendship in order to highlight how far LGBTQ rights have come and how much work remains in some areas. Outside supporters and friends of the LGBTQ community are also encouraged to attend the Pride celebrations because it allows everyone to show their support, observe, listen, and learn.
LGBT Pride Month History
LGBT History Month is a monthly celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history, as well as the history of gay rights and related civil rights movements. Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school history teacher, founded it in 1994.
Human rights activist Henry Gerber founded the US Society for Human Rights in 1924, making it the country’s first organization dedicated to gay rights. The organization’s goal was to break down stereotypes and prejudices about homosexuality. In connection with his work, Henry Gerber was also taken into custody numerous times. According to the police, the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City, was raided in 1969 on the grounds that it was selling alcohol without a permit. When the police forced its guests into police vans, the crowd became angry, and the police were forced to barricade themselves for safety.
This incident became known as The Stonewall Riot, and it received extensive media coverage, bringing to light the LGBT community’s problems. Protests in support of the gay community were held in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco in 1970.
Flag of the LGBT Community
Gilbert Baker, an openly gay man, and drag queen, created the pride flag in 1978. The rainbow stripes in the flag represent the various sexualities in the LGBT community. Furthermore, the colours in the flag each have a different meaning. Red represents like, pink represents sex, orange represents healing, yellow represents sunlight, green represents nature, turquoise represents art, indigo represents harmony, and violet represents spirit.

India is Decriminalising Homosexuality
The LGBT community in India won one of the most important battles when the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Section 377 was unconstitutional. During colonization, Section 377 of the IPC was enacted, which criminalized homosexuality. Section 377 was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2018. However, our country has a long way to go in this journey, as the LGBT community continues to face societal discrimination.
