Educational Qualification

The Union Public Service Commission has set a minimum level of education qualification that a candidate must possess to be eligible for the NDA examination. Aspirants must have passed the 12th Board exam to appear for the NDA/NA examination. The education qualification required to apply for the NDA exam is given below

Required Educational Qualification

For Army Wing of NDA

12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

For Air Force and Naval Wings of NDA

12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

For the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy

12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

The candidates appearing in the class 12th or equivalent examination are eligible to apply, whereas the candidates appearing in the Class 11th exam are not eligible for this examination.

Nationality

The candidates applying for the NDA exam must fulfill the conditions of the nationality, which have been provided below

  • A citizen of India, or
  • A subject of Nepal, or
  • A subject of Bhutan, or
  • A Tibetan refugee permanently settled in India from and before January 1, 1962.
  • A person of Indian origin migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, East African countries of Uganda, Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Malawi, Zaire, Zambia, Ethiopia ,and Vietnam to settle in India permanently.

The candidates belonging to the last four categories should submit the certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India to the recruiting body.

Marital Status

The candidates who are willing to appear for the NDA exam must be unmarried and should intend to stay unmarried until the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy training begins. If a candidate marries while undergoing UPSC NDA training, she will be expelled from the Academy.

Physical Standards

The candidates who qualify in the written exam and interview must undergo an NDA physical fitness or medical test for females. The authorities will examine the candidate’s physical and mental health at this stage. 

  • The candidate must be in good mental and physical health and free from any disease or disability which can interfere in the military training of the candidate.
  • The minimum acceptable height for the candidates is 157 cm (162.5 cm for Air Force).
  • The chest of the candidates must be well-developed. The expanded chest must be at least 81 cm. The minimum range of expansion after full inspiration should be 5 cm.
  • Myopia of the candidates should not be more than -2.5D including Astigmatism. Their manifest hypermetropia should not be more than +3.5D including Astigmatism. The Colour vision standard will be CP-III (Defective Safe).
