Veteran politician Mallikarjun Kharge of Karnataka won the election by defeating Shashi Tharoor to become the party's first non-Gandhi president in 24 years.
Sonia Gandhi, the president of the Congress party with the longest tenure, is being replaced by Mallikarjun Kharge.
Mallikarjun Kharrge is the Congress's second Dalit president in five decades, following Jagjivan Ram, who was elected in 1970.
Kharge received 7897 of the 9385 votes cast, while Tharoor received only 1072. According to sources, 416 votes were illegitimate.
