Droupadi Murmu (born 20 June 1958) is an Indian politician and the India's new president. She is the first person of a Scheduled Tribe (ST) to be elected President of India. She was the ninth Governor of Jharkhand prior to her presidency.

Early Life

From 1979 to 1983, she worked as a junior assistant in the irrigation department of the Government of Odisha. She later worked as a teacher at the Sri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre in Rairangpur.

In Rairangpur, Droupadi Murmu joined the BJP. She was elected to the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat council in 1997. She served as the Minister of State with Independent Charge for Commerce and Transportation in Odisha during the BJP-BJD coalition government. Murmu took the oath of office as Governor of Jharkhand on May 18, 2015, becoming the state's first female governor.
