Every year on June 17th, the United Nations commemorates the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. Its goal is to raise awareness about the presence of desertification and drought, as well as methods for preventing and recovering from drought. What is the definition of Desertification?

Desertification is a type of dryland land degradation in which biological productivity is lost as a result of natural processes or human activities, causing fertile areas to become increasingly arid. It is the spread of dry regions as a result of a variety of factors, including climate change and human-caused soil overexploitation.

World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought History

In the early 1990s, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating June 17 as World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. Every year on this day, the United Nations, non-governmental organizations, and countries hold events to raise awareness about desertification and drought.

The significance of this day is to regain the lands that have been lost. Furthermore, the ever-increasing demand for food, raw materials, highways, and housing has resulted in the melting of three-quarters of the world’s ice-free land. To reverse these losses, there should be a pressing need to recover from the pandemic and ensure people’s and the planet’s long-term survival.
