Every year, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) announces a new theme for World Intellectual Property Day.

- On August 9, 1999, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) officially established the day.
- The date of WIPO’s 30th founding anniversary, April 26, has been designated as World Intellectual Property Day.
- On April 26, 2000, 59 member countries celebrated the first World Intellectual Property Day.
- By 2005, 110 countries were commemorating World Intellectual Property Day. By 2022, the number had risen to 189 countries.
