Unit II: Self and Personality

This unit is about the study of self and personality in different approaches to appraise the human. Self-esteem, self-regulation, and self-efficacy; Culture and self; Concept of personality; Major approaches – Psychodynamic, Behavioural, Cultural; Assessment of personality, Type and Trait, Humanistic: Self Report measures, projective measures, and behavioural analysis


Unit III: Meeting Life Challenges

This unit concerns the nature of stress and the responses to stress. Effects on psychological functioning and health; Nature, types and sources of stress; Coping with stress; Promoting positive health and well-being.


Unit IV: Psychological Disorders

Concepts of abnormality and psychological disorders; Factors Underlying abnormal behaviour; Classification of disorders;

Major psychological disorders – Anxiety, Schizophrenic, Somatic, Mood, Dissociative, Developmental and Behavioural-Substance use related.


Unit V: Therapeutic Approaches

Nature and process of therapy: Therapeutic relationship; Types of therapies: Psychodynamic, Cognitive, Humanistic, Behaviour and Bio-medical; Alternative therapies — Meditation, Yoga; Rehabilitation of mentally ill.


Unit VI: Attitude and Social Cognition

Explaining social behaviour: Impression formation and explaining the behaviour of others through attributions; Schemas and stereotypes; Nature and components of attitudes;

Social cognition; Attitude formation and change; Behaviour in the presence of others; Prejudice and discrimination; Prosocial behaviour Strategies for handling prejudice.


Unit VII: Social Influence and Group Processes

Conformity, Compliance, and Obedience; Nature and formation

of groups; Types of groups; Cooperation and Competition; Social identity; Intergroup conflicts; Conflict resolution strategies. Influence of the group on individual behaviour.


Unit VIII: Psychology and Life

Environmental effects on human behaviour: Noise, crowding,

pollution, natural disasters; Human-environment relationship; Promoting pro-environmental behaviour; Psychology and

social concerns: Aggression, Discrimination and Poverty, Violence, Peace, health, the impact of television on behaviour.



Unit IX: Developing Psychological Skills

Effective psychological skills: Interviewing skills, Observational skills, Testing skills, Counselling skills — authenticity, positive regard, empathy, and Communication skills — listening.
