He was appointed treasurer of the party in 1961 and deputy leader of the opposition when the party was elected to the state assembly the following year. The DMK formed the government after winning the 1967 assembly elections (with Karunanidhi soundly defeating his Indian National Congress [Congress Party] opponent), and Annadurai became chief minister. The All India Dravidian Progressive Federation (All India Dravidian Munnetra Kazhagam, AIADMK) broke from the DMK in 1972. Following that, the two parties became bitter adversaries and swapped terms for control of the state government. Both the DMK and the AIADMK exploited their time in office to settle old grievances. In 1996, a Karunanidhi-led DMK administration filed various corruption accusations against AIADMK leader Jayalalitha Jayaram, who was later imprisoned for a short time.
