G20 Summit 2023: Amritsar Dates and Venues
Due to the law and order situation, there are indications that the G20 meeting may be moved from Amritsar, despite the ongoing preparations. This decision is reportedly due to incidents such as the storming of the Ajnala police station and a threat by the Sikh for Justice (SFJ), among others. Amritsar was set to host G20 meetings on education and L20 meetings on labor from March 15-17 and March 19-20, respectively, and the local administration had already started preparing the city for foreign guests. Although Deputy Commissioner Harpreet Singh Sudan has stated that the administration has not yet received any notification on this matter, the Congress leadership has sharply criticized the possible move of the venue from Amritsar to Delhi. Member of Parliament for Amritsar, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, tweeted his concern, stating that the apparent conspiracy to exclude Sri Amritsar Sahib from the G20 host list was revealed through national channels highlighting Amritpal, suggesting the failure of intel and law enforcement agencies.
Despite growing criticism of the AAP government in Punjab over the law and order situation, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Chief Secretary Vijay Kumar Janjua, and Punjab Police Inspector-General Sukhchain Singh Gill have all denied reports that the G-20 meetings will be shifted out of Amritsar. Amritsar is scheduled to host G20 meetings on education and L20 meetings on labor from March 15-17 and March 19-20, respectively, and the local administration has been working to beautify the city to welcome the G20 delegates. The chief minister, in an interview with reporters on Sunday, stated, “Don’t believe so much on sources. We do not have any such official information that the G-20 summit has been canceled (in Amritsar).” Chief Secretary Janjua has confirmed that the G-20 summit will take place in Amritsar as per the previously scheduled plan, and Punjab Police are capable of providing the necessary security for the event. IC Sukhchain Singh Gill also stated that the G-20 meetings will take place in Amritsar as scheduled. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) released a statement and Punjab Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney tweeted in support of the same.
