Ganga Dussehra, as mentioned in our ancient scriptures, that on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month, Punyatoya Maa Ganga had descended on the earth. Since then the tradition of celebrating this date as Ganga Dussehra started. It is one of the major festivities observed in India in the honour of Goddess Ganga who is also popular as Gangavataran. Ganga Dussehra in Ancient Hindu Scriptures
The day is celebrated to mark the descent of Ganga on Bhumi (Earth). Ganga Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing Moon) of the Jyestha month, as per the Hindu calendar.
In the Skanda Purana, while discussing the descent of the Ganges, it has been said that :
Vytipade Garanande,
Kanyachandre Vrushe Rawu.
Harte Dash Papani,
Tasmadshahra Smriti.
That is, on this day Jyeshtha month, Shukla Paksha, Dashami Tithi, Mercury day, Hasta Nakshatra, Vytipad, Gar and Anand Yoga, Moon in Virgo and Sun in Taurus, hence it is called Ganga Dussehra.
Importance of Ganga Dussehra
Ganga Dussehra signifies the potential of sacred Ganges to purify the ten sins which are related to actions, speech, and thoughts. It is believed that when the devotees worship Goddess Ganga on this day then they get relieved from their present and past sins as well as attain salvation.
It has also been said that on this day fasting for Mother Ganga, bathing in the Ganges and worshiping the Ganges methodically, the worshiper gets freedom from three types of physical, four types of speech and three types of mental – these ten sins. On this day one who bathes in the Ganges attains Baikuntha Lok, it has also been said in the Puranas. If for some reason it is not possible to reach the Ganges river, then the worshiper should offer sesame seeds after bathing in any river or pond near him.
Method of worshiping on Ganga Dussehra 2022
On this day, after bathing in the river Ganges, giving flowers and Arghya, the following mantra should be
chanted
Om Namo Bhagvatayai,
Dashpapaharai Gangaai,
Krishnai, Vishnurupinyai,
Nandinyai Namonam.
Apart from this, the worshiper living away from the Ganges river should worship the idol of Mother Ganga according to law with Akshat, flowers, incense etc. After this, worship the Ganges five times with this mantra
‘Om Namo Bhagwati, Aim Hreem Shrim (Vak-Kama-Mayamayi) Hili Hili, Milli Milli, Gange Maa Pavya Pavya’.
After worship, if possible, donate ten fruits, ten lamps and sesame seeds.
Ganga Dussehra 2022 Celebrations
It is most popularly celebrated in the states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, with the famous cities like Rishikesh, Haridwar, Varanasi, Patna, Garhmukteshwar and Prayagraj where devotees take holy dips and meditate.
Devotees also perform Pitra Tarpan for their deceased forefathers and their salvation on the day of Ganga Dussehra.
Ganga Dussehra 2022: Importance of number 10
Dussehra represents 10 fortunate Vedic calculations that demonstrate Ganga’s ability to wash away 10 sins relating to thoughts, deeds, and words. The number 10 is very significant on this day. Everything should be offered in the counts of ten, such as 10 fruits, 10 flowers, 10 incense sticks, etc. Similarly, donations should be given in numbers of ten.
Devotees also take 10 dips in the holy Ganga river to wash away all their sins. People throng Varanasi, Haridwar and Allahabad to offer prayers.
Devotees believe offering prayers on this day helps one attain salvation. Ganga Dussehra is a good period to buy precious items, new vehicles, or real estate. On this day, reciting the Ganga Stotram while standing at the banks of the holy river can wash away all sins.
