The First International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) was being conducted by the UN General Assembly (UNGA). The location of the event was in New York, USA. What is the Objective of the First International Migration Review Forum?
The objective of the event in official words were- “Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM)”. It was fixed that the IMRF will act as a forum to confer the progress on the enactment of all aspects of the GCM and its convergence with the UN SDGs. IMRF will be a chance for the international society to recognize the challenges faced by migrants. It will also acknowledge the contributions made by migrants to the community.
What is GCM?
GCM stands for Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration. It was adopted in 2018. GCM is the first inter-governmentally bargained understanding prepared under the UN, which covers all elements of migration. GCM recognizes and respects the sovereignty of a nation to decide who will enter and live in their territory. GCM basically advocates the need to protect the human rights of all migrants. With violence in the World becoming more frequent, many citizens leave their country to settle in a better part of the World. GCM looks after their rights and guarantees that they are safe and secured no matter where they are.
What events took place under the IMRF?
The first International Migration Review Forum consisted of
- Four interactive round tables,
- A Policy dialogue, and
- A plenary.
A Progress Declaration will be adopted at the end of each session. Since 2018, this is the first opportunity for the nations to discuss the opportunities and challenges in adopting the GCM.
