PARAM ANANTA, a supercomputer which is devoted solely to the nation, was commissioned at IIT Gandhinagar on 30th May 2022 as part of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM)dedicated to the nation, was commissioned at IIT Gandhinagar as part of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM). PARAM ANANTA Supercomputer is a collaborative partnership of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST). IIT Gandhinagar and Center for Development in Advanced Computing (C-DAC) mutually agreed and signed an MoU on 12th October 2020. At IIT Gandhinagar, the government has installed an indigenously built Param Ananta supercomputer with 838 teraflops of computational capability. Previously, the government had deployed 12 supercomputers to a number of prestigious academic institutions, including IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Pune, among others.

PARAM Supercomputers – What’s Supercomputer?

A supercomputer performs at a higher level than a general-purpose computer. Instead of million instructions per second (MIPS), a supercomputer’s performance can be measured in floating-point operations per second (FLOPS). Supercomputers are massive computers with ten thousand processors that can do billions or trillions of calculations per second. These supercomputers are useful for real-time operations because information travels swiftly between processors in comparison to distributed computing systems.

PARAM Ananta Supercomputer – National Supercomputing Mission

The National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) was launched in 2015 by the Government of India. NSM has planned a Rs 4,500 crore seven-year plan to deploy 73 indigenous supercomputers by 2022. The aim of the government was to use a supercomputing grid with more than 70 high-performance computing facilities to connect R&D and academic institutions across the country. NSM was also initiated to reduce inefficiencies and duplication of effort, and to get the most out of supercomputing investments. This NSM initiative is a collaboration between the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Top Supercomputers under this mission are PARAM Shivay, PARAM Sanganak, PARAM Pravega.
