World Polio Day is observed on 24th October to commemorate Jonas Salk’s birth anniversary.The inactivated (killed) polio vaccine (IPV), which was the first defence against the illness, was created under his leadership. Rotary International, an international service organisation that unites commercial, professional, and community leaders to serve others, improve honesty, and advance goodwill, peace, and understanding in the world, launched the day. Over the past three decades, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), a joint effort of the WHO and state governments, has been vigilant in keeping track of the illness.
Polio or poliomyelitis is described by the WHO as “a highly contagious viral disease, primarily affecting young children.” It is a neurological condition that can be fatal and is incapacitating. The poliovirus is the disease that causes polio, which can be fatal and cause disabilities.

- The oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) is administered orally at birth, followed by three primary doses at 6, 10, and 14 weeks, and one booster dose at 16-24 months of age.
