IIT Gandhinagar and Center for Development in Advanced Computing (C-DAC) mutually agreed and signed an MoU on 12th October 2020. At IIT Gandhinagar, the government has installed an indigenously built Param Ananta supercomputer with 838 teraflops of computational capability. Previously, the government had deployed 12 supercomputers to a number of prestigious academic institutions, including IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Pune, among others.

  • To aid computational research, a supercomputer was built as part of Phase 2 of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM).
  • To address the computing requirements of diverse areas of science and engineering, the system is integrated with a mix of CPU nodes, GPU nodes, high memory nodes, high throughput storage, and high-performance Infiniband interlinks.
  •  The high-performance supercomputer can perform 838 million trillion computations per second.

PARAM Ananta Supercomputer – Overview

  • “PARAM” stands for superior in Sanskrit.
  • PARAM Ananta is a less expensive high-performance supercomputer based on C-DAC.
  • It is procured from C-DAC & PARAM 10000.
  • Emphasizing on the Make in India mission, the majority of the components used in PARAM Ananta supercomputer system are manufactured and assembled in India, including an indigenous software stack built by C-DAC.
  • In this supercomputer, servers based on Multiple-Intel Processors are utilized as basic building blocks.
  • Configuration of PARAM Anant with other networks such as ATM, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet is also possible.
  • PARAM Ananta has a very flexible mechanical packaging varying in system with few nodes to multiple nodes at large.
  • It has an integrated system for high performance computing.
  • Education, research and business sectors can effectively use the benefits of supercomputing with the help of PARAM Ananta.

PARAM Supercomputers – What’s Supercomputer?

A supercomputer performs at a higher level than a general-purpose computer. Instead of million instructions per second (MIPS), a supercomputer’s performance can be measured in floating-point operations per second (FLOPS). Supercomputers are massive computers with ten thousand processors that can do billions or trillions of calculations per second. These supercomputers are useful for real-time operations because information travels swiftly between processors in comparison to distributed computing systems.

PARAM Supercomputers – Evolution

  • In 1980, the Indian government established an indigenous development programme in response to many concerns with procuring supercomputers from outside.
  • In December 1986, the National Aerospace Laboratories began work on the “Flosolver MK1” parallel processing system.
  • After this, many organizations, including C-DAC, C-DOT, NAL, BARC, and ANURAG, were hired to work on various projects.
  • Despite the fact that the C-DAC project released the “PARAM” family of supercomputers, it wasn’t until 2015 that the National Supercomputing Mission was launched that India’s supercomputers received a boost.
  • PARAM Siddhi-AI is India’s fastest supercomputer and ranks 63rd in the TOP500 list as of November 2020.

PARAM Ananta Supercomputer – National Supercomputing Mission

The National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) was launched in 2015 by the Government of India. NSM has planned a Rs 4,500 crore seven-year plan to deploy 73 indigenous supercomputers by 2022. The aim of the government was to use a supercomputing grid with more than 70 high-performance computing facilities to connect R&D and academic institutions across the country. NSM was also initiated to reduce inefficiencies and duplication of effort, and to get the most out of supercomputing investments. This NSM initiative is a collaboration between the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Top Supercomputers under this mission are PARAM Shivay, PARAM Sanganak, PARAM Pravega.
