International literacy day quiz: International Literacy Day, which is observed on September 8 each year, aims to increase public awareness of and concern for local and international literacy problems. In order to “remind the people of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights,” the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, established International Literacy Day in 1966. The burden of illiteracy is once again placed on local communities in honor of International Literacy Day when literacy is spread one person at a time.
Although significant progress has been made in raising education rates in the more than 50 years since the founding of International Literacy Day, illiteracy is still a major global issue. It is estimated that there are more than 750 million illiterate adults worldwide. Every country and culture on earth is impacted by illiteracy, including the United States, where an estimated 32 million people lack basic literacy skills. In India, 81% of adults were literate in 2015.
