Police Rank List – Indian Police Rank List, Category-Wise

1. Director General Of Police (DGP)

DGP is the highest ranking police officer in any state i.e. the highest police rank in India. S/He is the most powerful person in the state police and controls the police in the entire state Hence the DGP is also known as the Police Chief of State. In the Police Rank List, the DGP (Director General of Police) is a three-star level police officer. In this way, the DGP is the highest position in the police.

2. Additional Director General of Police (ADGP)

ADGPs are IPS who is appointed as a regional chief in different states. Like the DGP, a three-star cop but the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) is considered subordinate to the Director General of Police (DGP) in the Police Rank List.

3. Inspector General of Police (IG)

The Inspector General of Police (IG) is an officer of the IPS rank in the Police Rank List. The holder of the third highest rank in the police department of all states in India. The rank of an IG is lower than the Additional Chief of Police (ADGP) and directly below the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).

4. Deputy Inspector General of Police 

The DIG is known as the Deputy Inspector General. It is the fourth superior powerful police position on the Police Rank List. This is a one-star rank in the Indian Police Service. Only officers of the Indian Police Service (IPS) or the State Police Service are promoted to this rank. Officers have succeeded as Superintendent of Police (SSP) or Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). The position of DIG (Deputy Inspector General of the Ministry of Public Security) is no longer vacant because only experienced staff of IPS can be filled in this position. Who during his service period has not acted contrary to the provisions of the law. There can be more than one DIG agent in any state. It depends on the population, region and the needs of the state.

5. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP)

The SSP is known as the Senior Superintendent of Police who is the IPS level, police officer. The person is responsible for maintaining law and order in urban or densely populated counties in the state and for preventing crime in the state. There are two stars on the uniform of an SSP officer. Like the DIG, no direct recruitment has been held for the position of the SSP. Conversely, the police officer occupying the SP position is promoted to the SSP in the Police Rank List.

6. Superintendent of Police (SP)

The SP is called the Superintendent of Police in the Police Rank List. The person appointed by the Government of India as the District Leader of the Non-Metropolitan Districts of the Nation in India. The Superintendent of Police (SP) is the leader of a small county as well as a large, densely populated urban or rural area. While the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) is the head of major cities or municipalities. That is, SP officers are appointed to head a large rural or urban area in the same district that the SSP is designated to head.

7. Additional Superintendent of Police (Add. SP)

The Additional Director of Police (Add. SP) is called the Additional Director of the Police who is the IPS level police officer in the Police Rank List. The rank of Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) or Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) is the higher level of the DSP. If the police officer is under the state police service, he will get the rank of DSP, but if he is under the Indian Police Service (IPS), he will receive the rank of ASP.

8. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)

The Deputy Superintendent of Police is a senior police officer as per the Police Rank List. The DSP has the same powers as the ACP. In states like Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, DSPs are appointed as Circle Directors (COs). The DSP officer is the state police representative who gives instructions to the state police officers. The Deputy Director of Public Security has the right to make a surprise inspection. Accordingly, he can observe anytime, anywhere.

9. Police Inspector (PI)

Police Inspector (PI) is an officer in charge of a police station. Every police station in India has a police officer, sheriff, sub-inspector and inspector. A police inspector is the supreme commander of the entire police station. Police inspectors are responsible for maintaining public order in the entire area under the jurisdiction of the police station. The rank of police inspector (PI) is higher than the rank of inspector and lower than the rank of DSP as per the Police Rank List. 

10. Sub-Inspector (SI)

Sub-inspector (SI) is known as a sub-inspector whose duty is to give the command to some police officers like head constable etc in the Police Rank List. He is in charge of the entire police station and comes under the Police Inspector. He is one of the highest-ranking police officers who can file an indictment in court according to the rules and regulations. The sub-inspector is the first investigator. The rank of SI is higher than that of Assistant Inspector (ASI) and lower than that of Police Inspector.

11. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI)

The Assistant Inspector is a non-gazetted (unlisted) officer in the Police Rank List. this rank is higher than constables and under below Inspector. ASI is also known as Havildar Major. An assistant inspector can also be an investigative officer, but most police or DSP inspectors are designated as investigative officers.

12. Head Constable (Havildar)

The post of chief constable, like all other police posts that people must know, is by the name Havildar and is highly responsible in the Police Rank List. Your main job is to support the sub-inspector. A police officer with the rank of Head Constable (Havildar) works in the office to write reports and keep records.

13. Senior Constable (Lance Naik)

The rank of Senior Constable is higher than the rank of Police Constable. A senior police officer’s uniform has a black rank stripe instead of a badge. There is also a yellow rank stripe above it, though some states also have a red stripe instead of a batch in the Police Rank List.

14. Police Constable (PC)

A police constable is the lowest rank in the Police Rank List. The main task of a police constable is to register FIR. He also acts as a helping hand to the police officer in any case and can take necessary actions if the police officer is not present at the police station.
