Based on the prime minister’s vision, the government has taken several steps to improve the dairy sector, resulting in a more than 44% increase in milk production over the past eight years. The IDF World Dairy Summit 2022 is the annual meeting of the global dairy sector, attracting around 1,500 participants from around the world.

IDF World Dairy Summit 2022 – Overview
India is the number one producer of milk, accounting for 23% of the world’s milk production, followed by the United States, China, Pakistan and Brazil. The top five milk-producing states are Uttar Pradesh (14.9%), Rajasthan (14.6%), Madhya Pradesh (8.6%), Gujarat (7.6%) and Andhra Pradesh (7.0%). IDF Sector Shortcomings
Shortage of Fodder
There is a plethora of non-productive animals competing with productive dairy animals for available feed and feed utilization. Due to industrial development, grazing land has decreased significantly year by year, and there is a lack of demand for fodder and fodder.
Health
Veterinary care centres are remote, have high cattle to veterinary facility ratios, and lack animal health services. There is also high mortality in calves, especially buffaloes, due to non-adherence to regular and routine immunization schedules and non-implementation of regular deworming programs as planned. Many ranchers do not provide adequate shelter for their cattle, exposing them to extreme climatic conditions.
Informal Nature of Dairy Sector
Unlike sugarcane, wheat and rice farmers, ranchers are unorganized and lack the political clout to defend their rights.
Lack of Remunerative Pricing
The value of the milk produced exceeds the combined value of India’s wheat and rice production, but there are no official and regular estimates of milk production costs and minimum support prices.
