Every year on November 26th, India celebrates Constitution Day to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution. The Constituent Assembly of India enacted the Indian Constitution on November 26, 1949, and it went into effect on January 26, 1950, ushering in a new era in Indian history. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about the importance of the constitution and to propagate the views and concepts of BR Ambedkar, the father of the Indian constitution. Previously known as Law Day, Constitution Day is now also known as Samvidhan Diwas. The 26th of November 2022 will be the 72nd anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution, whereas the 26th of November 2021 will be the 71st anniversary.

History of Indian constitution day

Under the 1946 Cabinet Mission Plan, the constituent legislature of India drafted the Indian Constitution. Dr. Sachidanand Sinha was chosen as the assembly’s provisional president during the first meeting for this proposal on December 9, 2021. The first president of India and the assembly’s permanent chair, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, was inaugurated on December 11, 1946.

Under the leadership of Dr. BR Ambedkar, a 13-member committee and a drafting committee were established to prepare the constitution.

A draught was afterwards created by the seven-member drafting committee based on the committee reports. Our constitution has 395 articles, 22 parts, and 12 schedules, making it the longest written constitution in history.

The Ambedkar Memorial’s unveiling at the Mumbai neighbourhood of Indu Mills in October 2015 served as the catalyst for the creation of this day. The Indian government then proclaimed November 26 as Constitution Day via a gazette notification on November 19, 2015. The Ministry of External Affairs instructed embassies to translate the Constitution into the local language of that country and distribute copies of it to various academies, libraries, etc. The Ministry of External Affairs also directed all overseas Indian schools to observe November 26 as Constitution Day.

Significance of Indian Constitution Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated in 2015 that the 26th of November would be honored as Constitution Day. The year 2015 marks the 125th commemoration of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, also known as the Father of the Indian Constitution. It is a tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s enormous legacy and to the legend himself. Constitution Day also represents efforts to raise awareness of the constitution’s values. It is also critical to remember and adhere to the values and beliefs instilled in the hearts of millions of Indians and others by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

How is Indian Constitution Day Celebrated?

The goal of commemorating Constitution Day is to inform and reaffirm the nation’s citizens about the value of the Constitution and the tireless efforts of the Drafting Committee in creating it. The Preamble of the Constitution is read aloud by various governmental bodies at a set time each year as one of the activities of Constitution Day festivities in an effort to accomplish this. Other activities would also be carried out in addition to this. There would also be seminars and workshops on the Constitution’s role in fostering nationalism. On this day, there isn’t any pompous celebration. The day, however, is observed differently everywhere and in different ways:
