History of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Henchmen of dictator Rafael Trujillo massacred the Dominican Republic’s Mirabal sisters on November 25, 1960. The sisters, who were involved in anti-Trujillo movements, were battered and strangled before being put in a Jeep that was driven off a mountain road to make their deaths seem unintentional. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1999. On this day, 16 days of activism and memory begin, leading up to International Human Rights Day. According to a United Nations research, 19% of women between the ages of 15 and 49 had been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence “by an intimate partner.” The victims of this violence sometimes pass away.

The United Nations General Assembly established the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in 1999. To honour the lives of the Dominican Republic’s Mirabal sisters, who were brutally murdered in 1960, the date of November 25 was chosen. The day honours them and calls for increased awareness of gender-based violence worldwide.

Significance of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2022

The day is observed with the intention of ending and preventing violence against women and girls. The day also calls for action on a global scale to bridge financial gaps and guarantee the provision of crucial assistance for those who have experienced violence during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. The day also emphasises data collection and prevention that might enhance life-saving interventions for women and girls.

Among women who encounter violence, less than 40% ask for assistance. Because of the stigma and humiliation, many cases of abuse and violence against women go unreported. One of the most pervasive and harmful abuses of human rights occurring today is the ongoing abuse of women and girls. In its efforts to raise awareness and put an end to violence against women and girls, it is imperative that the International Day of Violence Against Women be observed actively.

Eliminating violence against women is essential because:

  • Girls’ and women’s psychological, sexual, and reproductive health are negatively impacted.
  • Their ability to pursue higher education and find employment is constrained.
  • It lessens a nation’s chances of achieving progress, equality, peace, and the realisation of the human rights of women and girls.
