The Constituent Assembly of India enacted the Indian Constitution on November 26, 1949, and it went into effect on January 26, 1950, ushering in a new era in Indian history. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about the importance of the constitution and to propagate the views and concepts of BR Ambedkar, the father of the Indian constitution. Previously known as Law Day, Constitution Day is now also known as Samvidhan Diwas. History of Indian constitution day
Under the 1946 Cabinet Mission Plan, the constituent legislature of India drafted the Indian Constitution. Dr. Sachidanand Sinha was chosen as the assembly’s provisional president during the first meeting for this proposal on December 9, 2021. The first president of India and the assembly’s permanent chair, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, was inaugurated on December 11, 1946.
Under the leadership of Dr. BR Ambedkar, a 13-member committee and a drafting committee were established to prepare the constitution.
A draught was afterwards created by the seven-member drafting committee based on the committee reports. Our constitution has 395 articles, 22 parts, and 12 schedules, making it the longest written constitution in history.
The Ambedkar Memorial’s unveiling at the Mumbai neighbourhood of Indu Mills in October 2015 served as the catalyst for the creation of this day. The Indian government then proclaimed November 26 as Constitution Day via a gazette notification on November 19, 2015. The Ministry of External Affairs instructed embassies to translate the Constitution into the local language of that country and distribute copies of it to various academies, libraries, etc. The Ministry of External Affairs also directed all overseas Indian schools to observe November 26 as Constitution Day.
