National Cancer Awareness Day Theme 2022: India commemorates National Cancer Awareness Day on November 7. The relevance of greater public knowledge of cancer prevention and early detection is highlighted by the day. The National Cancer Control Program was introduced in 1975 with the goal of providing cancer treatment facilities across the country. Each year, approximately 1.1 million new cases in India are reported. The likelihood of a patient surviving is decreased by two-thirds when cancer is discovered in an advanced stage. To enhance research on cancer prevention and early diagnosis, a number of programmes have been launched.

As the number of cancer patients increases in the nation each year, so does the significance of this day, which aims to prevent cancer deaths in India and raise awareness about the value of early detection of lifestyle choices, unhealthy eating patterns, and infections that increase the risk of cancer by promoting widespread awareness, early detection, and prevention so we can promptly combat the deadly disease.

On a global scale, Cancer Day is also observed, and the subject for Cancer Day 2022 was “Close the Care Gap.” The goal of the campaign was to raise awareness of the disparities in cancer care that exist worldwide. It involves being open-minded and questioning presumptions. It suggested that, in order to make it comfortable for the patient, there is a gap in caring for cancer patients, which should be filled. It also emphasizes the necessity of working together to defeat cancer because the disease has a mental strain on both patients and those who provide care for them.

National Cancer Awareness Day 2022: A Brief History

National Cancer Awareness Day was first formally declared in September 2014 by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, the Union’s then-minister of health. The day of the event, November 7, was chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the birth of Madame Curie, a Nobel Prize–winning scientist recognised for his contributions to the fight against cancer and his discoveries of radium and polonium. Her studies influenced the development of radiotherapy and nuclear energy as cancer treatments. The National Cancer Control Programme was established in 1975 and put into place to provide cancer treatment facilities around the nation. This was a critical first step in the country’s fight against this deadly disease. Ten years later, in 1984-1985, the program’s goals were revised to place more emphasis on early cancer detection and prevention.

With the goal of boosting early detection and cancer research, Harsh Vardhan launched a state-level cancer control campaign. Free cancer screenings are provided as part of National Cancer Awareness Day by the CGHS, local clinics, and government hospitals. To increase understanding of cancer prevention and early symptom identification, educational leaflets are also dispersed. Additionally, he suggests that early detection could reduce the cost of treating cancer compared to when it is discovered at an advanced stage. The death rate is greatly decreased if people seek screening as soon as the first symptoms arise.
